Stop Calling Others Basic

By 8:00 AM , photo

Of all the popular slang terms used this year, being called "basic" has by far been one of the top 5 favorites of my generation.

Urban dictionary defines "basic" as a word used to describe something that is uninteresting, vapid, boring, or uncool (among other various interpretations).

Things that make a person "basic" include, but are not limited to:

  • Drinking pumpkin spiced lattes
  • Wearing Ugg boots
  • Enjoying yoga
  • Going gluten-free/organic
  • Eating brunch
  • Using Instagram regularly
  • Loving Taylor Swift

I read an article on Cosmo recently about being called basic and the stigma that surrounds it, and why we should embrace the label. Read it here and let me know what you think.

The thing that bothers me about calling others "basic" is that it's a judgment based on a preconceived notion of what it means to enjoy certain things. It alludes to the idea that you should be embarrassed about enjoying mainstream past times, which is sort of insane to me.

Why is it that when something is popular among hundreds (if not, thousands) in the world, I should be embarrassed to like it, too?

I've always hated this idea that enjoying things that a lot of people also enjoy makes you a loser, a follower, or just boring.

Some people have shallow interests that don't delve much below the surface, but whose business is that? And also, is it really fair to assume that when someone likes drinking pumpkin drinks and listening to Taylor Swift on repeat, they have no interests other than that?

I enjoy science fiction, reading Stephen King novels, and discussing economics and socio-political issues in the world.

I also happen to love drinking tea, pumpkin-scented candles, Sex and the City (I watch it religiously), and I've been known to blast Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift songs in my car.

And you know what? I'm not embarrassed about it. You shouldn't be, either.

Let's just dump "basic" and perhaps view ourselves as ... well-rounded.
