Tips for Flawless Lips

By 8:00 AM ,

In case you haven't noticed, it's all about lipcolor this fall. Whether you're rocking a red lip or a deep plum, it's crucial that you get it just right or else you could end up looking like a little girl who got her hands on her mom's lipstick. Here's my tips for achieving a flawless dark bold lip!

To begin, you'll want to set your lips with your foundation and powder. This helps create a blank canvas for your lips and gives the lip products something to adhere to.

Some like to apply a lip liner first, but that's totally up to you. I didn't for this look because I don't have a lip liner that matches this dark lipstick. Anyway, then apply your dark lipstick. It doesn't have to be perfect - you can clearly see that mine isn't! - but that's okay because we'll be cleaning up the edges later. I love this lipstick by Revlon, it's super dark and moisturizing.

I like to clean up the edges with a q-tip after that. Then, because I want a little more dimension to my lips, I added a little of this red lipstick on top. It keeps the lips from looking too dark and too red - it's the perfect in-between for a darker lip. I apply it with a small brush or q-tip: either works for me.

I then use a concealer and a small brush to clean up the edges of my lips again. I spend a lot of time in this step perfecting the color I want by adding more red or black cherry. Feel free to mix as you like! Then I like to apply a light dusting of powder over my lips to mattify them and help the color last. You can either use your regular powder or translucent powder; I like to pat it on with my finger.

If you have a larger bottom lip, try tapering in the corners a little bit so they look thinner. It gives the illusion of lips that are more proportionate to each other.

Also, for fuller-looking lips, either add a dab of lip gloss to the center of the top and bottom lip or apply a little white eyeliner on your cupid's bow. It adds dimension to the lips.
