Top 5 Fall Fashion Pieces

By 8:00 AM

I live for fall fashion. When it comes to my personal style, I just don't care as much about fashion for warmer weather. Because I live in Alabama, the heat is so overwhelming that I can't bring myself to complicate my outfits much more than shorts and t-shirts. But when the fall comes, I can break out my beloved jackets, jeans, and accessories. Here's a list of the top 5 items I NEED to get through the fall.

1. Leather Jacket

As most of you probably know my now, I'm obsessed with leather jackets. It's a general fashion staple for me - I don't think my style would be the same without them. I think it's great to have one quality leather jacket, but if you're not willing to shell out much money for one, I suggest buying 1-2 (or more - you can never have too many, really) decent quality jackets that are reasonably priced. The great thing about leather jackets is that you can find them almost anywhere. The trick to finding the perfect one is to look everywhere, not just in two or three stores you usually shop in. I found one of my leather jackets in a boutique at a mall somewhere that I usually would never shop in, but decided to give it a try that particular day. TIP: Don't be afraid to look in the men's section - sometimes you can find a really great jacket there!

2. Scarves

When it's chilly out, I wear scarves practically every day. It's a simple way to jazz up any outfit. If I don't feel like putting in much effort but still want to look presentable, I always reach for a sweater or cardigan, jeans, and a scarf. I love darker colors like deep plums and blues, but don't be afraid to experiment with bright or patterned scarves. Much like leather jackets, you can find cheap scarves anywhere. I prefer buying inexpensive scarves in bulk rather than splurging on expensive ones - I find that it doesn't really make much of a difference, so I'd rather have plenty to choose from.

3. Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are crucial for me in the fall because I love wearing them tucked into tall boots. They're a great jean to have on hand for any look, really. They look great with flats, ankle booties, heels, and tall boots. I like to have a few pairs to choose from in dark washes for the most flattering effect. Old Navy is my favorite place for jeans, specifically skinny jeans. Their Rock Star skinny jeans are to DIE for - they're fitted all the way through the leg, as opposed to other skinny jeans that can tend to get stretched out in the calf area. They're also fairly cheap. I have three pairs .... no big deal. TIP: Although I love a good dark wash denim, don't be afraid to experiment with brightly colored jeans! They add a nice pop of color for the fall.

4. Boots

Boots are another crucial piece for me in the fall. Whether they're short, tall, heeled, flat, combat, embellished or plain, I've gotta have them all! I like to have a variety of boots on hand for different looks. A nice tall, low-heeled boot is my number one necessity, however. They look great with practically any outfit, whether you want to dress up or down. You can wear them with tight skinny jeans and a cute top, or leggings and a cozy sweater. Whether you prefer black, brown or grey boots is up to you; however, consider what you wear on a daily basis before investing in a pair of boots. I wear mostly black, so I prefer to buy black boots. Buy whatever suits your style!

5. Pea Coat

A good pea coat is something I also must have in the fall. It's a great classic coat for when you need to look a little more dressed up or professional. This is one piece I'd recommend really investing in; I have one high-quality pea coat that I've had for years, and I expect to have it for years to come. Although this is a coat you'll have to take more care for, it's well worth it. It's also a great tool to fool people into thinking you've dressed up more than you really did - I can't tell you how many times I woke up late for class in college and wore the ratty t-shirt I slept in to class; however, I would throw my pea coat and a scarf over it, and nobody knew the difference! Like the boots, I recommend buying this coat in a darker color that goes with most of your outfits. You can never go wrong with a nice black pea coat.
