The November Thankful-Fest: Cop Out or Not?

By 8:00 AM ,

In the past several years, I always get annoyed around this time of the year. With November comes Thanksgiving, and with Thanksgiving comes the hundreds of people taking time every day of the month to announce to everyone what they're thankful for.

I know most people think this is a nice idea, to say what you're thankful for. But it's always annoyed me because I think to myself - why do you only talk about this in November? Why is this the only time of the year that you feel inclined to be thankful?

I know it's cynical, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

However, even though I used to consider this thankful month a cop-out, deep down I know it's not an inherently bad thing to do. I mean, talking about what you're thankful for in general is a good thing, is it not?

Maybe it's a cop out, maybe it's not. Either way, it gets people thinking about what they appreciate in their lives. And perhaps with a little extra thought about all the good things they have, they'll think to themselves, "Hey, maybe I should spend time throughout the whole year to be thankful! This is a great feeling!"

At least, one can only hope.

What do you guys think? Is it a cop out, or does it truly make people appreciate what they have more?

  1. I feel the same, why only say once a year what you're thankful for? I'm thankful year round.

  2. I think it's the time for atonement for some LOL... I, for one, and thankful every second of every minute of every day for the breathe in my lungs and my family and fur babies.... not just in November :P

  3. I can totally relate - I have occasionally rolled my eyes at the daily posts in the month of November beginning "today I'm thankful for...". It shouldn't matter what time of year it is, but like you said - if it opens someone's eyes and makes them think, then at least some good is coming out of it.
