Why Receiving Gifts is Great

By 9:30 AM ,

As the holiday season comes around, everyone and their mother talks about why they love giving gifts so much more than receiving them. I really can't think of a single person I've ever met who didn't say that they love giving gifts because of how rewarding it is.

Well, since I'm one of those people who loves playing the devil's advocate from time to time, I'm going to talk about why I love receiving gifts. And you know it's true, so you might as well go ahead and agree with me!

---   ---   ---

1. It lets you know what people think of you.

You can tell a lot about what someone thinks about you when you see what gift they give you. I can tell exactly what kind of person someone thinks I am by what they give me, whether it's for Christmas or my birthday. If someone thinks you're smart, they give you a book. If someone thinks you're fashionable, they give you a scarf or some jewelry. It's interesting to see what a person would pick for you.

2. It shows a person's creativity.

A gift says a lot about your creativity and what you are willing to do for a decent gift. If you give out gift cards regularly, it doesn't show much creativity. However, if you make me something elaborate - or really make me anything at all - it shows me that you are creative and genuinely care about this gift.

3. It shows how well someone knows you.

The single most important thing about receiving a gift is that it shows how well that person knows you. I've gotten plenty of gifts that were me to a T, and I've also gotten a ton of gifts that I would have never in a million years picked out for myself. And that says a lot about how well that person knows me. If a person knows you very well and demonstrates that with a gift, it makes you more willing to form a bond with that person and to spend time getting to know them in return, which will making giving a gift to them even more rewarding.

4. But honestly, who doesn't love free stuff?

I mean, let's be real here - you got something for free that you've been wanting for awhile. What could be better than that? #sorryboutit
